How to Write Effective Newspaper Ads

A successful newspaper ad is one which grabs the readers attention and creates customers. In this article I will present a few simple tips to write effective newspaper ads. Let’s start.

First of all the ad headline. It is very important to create an eye-catching headline (title) for your newspaper ad. The headline will cause the reader to read the entire ad. One way to do it right is by reading some successful ads in newspapers or magazines. Locate the most appealing ones and see if you can get any ideas for your own ads. Write down a few of your ideas and wait for a few hours. Then come back and select the most appropriate for your own newspaper ads.

If you create a wonderful appealing headline then it should be easier to move on and write the rest of the ad. What you want now is to create interest for your readers. In order to capture your reader’s attention you must tell them what’s in it for them. A good way to do that is by presenting a solution for their problem. Don’t give them the entire solution though because this will create enough interest for the reader to make the next step.

By writing a good headline and creating enough interest you are almost done. Now, the reader should be reading the entire ad but there’s something missing. It’s the necessary desire that will make the reader want more. Desire for more information, for your product or your services. One way to do this is by making an offer to the readers that they can’t refuse. For example, you can offer a price no one else would.

By now you should have an eye-catching, nice looking newspaper ad but we are not done yet. You need to add some finishing touch. You need to inform the readers of the actions they need to take in order to fulfill their desire for more information, for your product or services. This “Call to action” could be a phone call, a purchase or other instructions (e.g. how to complete a free offer). Just try to be specific so as not to confuse the readers.

Last but not least include the necessary information in your ads like your company name, the products or services offered, your website or other contact information like your phone number, address or company logo. It’s up to you. Add all the info you believe is necessary for the accomplishment of the purpose of your newspaper ad which is to create a new prospect or customer.

Before publishing your newspaper ad make sure there are no spelling or grammar errors.

Writing a wonderful newspaper ad is one thing and testing the ad for effectiveness is another. No matter how good you are in writing newspaper ads you need to test your ads to make sure they grab the reader’s attention. You have to find a way to measure “return of investment”. Don’t just wait for a year …

7 Uses for Old Newspaper

People have been inventing ways to reuse their news since they began printing. Many uses have been handed down from generation to generation simply by the process of "This is what we do." As times changed and people no longer actually used the paper after reading it, putting it in the recycling bin became the thing to do. Now that more of us are becoming aware of limited resources – the planet's as well as our own – new uses for old newspaper are being created.

First, let me give you a few facts about newsprint. Newsprint is the paper used in your daily newspaper. Once made mostly of wood pulp, it is now made with a combination of materials, including wood scraps, sawdust, and recycled paper. According to, Canada is the largest supplier of newsprint while the United States is the largest consumer. In spite of widespread use of the Internet, the newspaper business is still a thriving industry.

Generations have used newspapers to wash windows or start a fire. Ask anyone who lived during the Great Depression and you are sure to hear a number of ways newspapers were used and reused until they were thrown away or burned.

I recently found some unique and (to me) new uses for old newspaper. Here are seven of my favorites:

1. Get rid of odors. Crumpled newsprint stuffed into smelly shoes for a couple of days will absorb odors. It can also be used in a musty basement, closet or refrigerator. If you've ever had an old freezer, you know that musty smell! Replace with fresh paper each week until the smell is gone.

2. Mulch the garden or compost . Shredded newspaper is not pretty, but it helps keep weeds at bay in a flower or vegetable garden. You can also tear paper into small pieces and add to the compost pile.

3. Use it as wrapping paper . Use the comics for a child, the sports section for fans, or the finance section for the executive. As an added bonus, make a bow from the same section with easy directions online or in craft shops.

4. Protect outdoor plants. If a cold snap is coming in, cover outdoor plants with newspaper pages. Secure to plant stems or borders with clothespins. * This is only good to use if weather is dry.

5. Prevent ice on windshields. Placing several sheets of newspaper on the windshield of a car makes leaving for work on an icy morning easier. Lay the sheets across the glass & fasten with easy to remove tape. In the morning, simply remove paper & drive away with a clear view!

6. Help boots, hats, and purses keep their shape. Stuffing the inside of each item with crumpled paper before storing for a season helps keep their shape and keep odors at bay.

7. Replace paper towels. Newsprint is great for absorbing spilled liquids or wiping grease from a frying pan. It also works great to …

Ice Dancing – The Epitome of Grace and Skill

The world of Ice Dancing had some good news recently. The Canadian Ice Dance duo of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir who set the competition on fire at the 2010 Vancouver Games with their scintillating golden moves took to the floor this month at the Skate Canada Autumn Classic International. This is their first performance together in nearly two and a half years; the last time they skated they won the silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Games in Russia. And not surprisingly, the score of 77.2 points that they notched up in the Short Dance was well ahead of the Danish pair that finished second.

However, there is still the Free Dance part of the competition ahead.

Ice Dancing is a popular sport coming under the discipline of Figure Skating; it became an official Olympic sport in 1976. As the term indicates, the routine involves a couple consisting of a man and a woman performing spins and rhythmic dance moves to a musical piece. There are strict requirements for the performance to be evaluated such as no jumps and throws and no separation beyond two arm lengths.

Ice Dancing differs greatly from figure skating where skaters’ skills are focused on jumps and spins and in the precision of the footwork. This is one of the reasons why the Artistic Director of Ice Dance International, a professional company that performs around the world, is keen to move the activity from ‘sport’ to that of an ‘art’. Ice Dancing is all about expansive power and speed, flow and flight and the design that we get to see on the ice and hence it is more of an art than a sport discipline is the contention.

In the 1930s, many elements of what is known as Compulsory Dances comprised moves developed by ice dances from Great Britain. Since joining the World Championships in 1952, British teams have won twelve out of the first sixteen world championships. The moves back then were more drawn towards an upright carriage and angular moves. From the 1960s however when more ice dances from Europe started to join in, a new trend in dance moves began to emerge involving more upper body movement and greater speed.

Throughout the 1970s and 80s, Soviet dancers took centre-stage through their more theatrical styles based on elements of ballet which emphasized extended line and speed rather than difficult footwork. The Russian pair of Lyudmila Pakhomova and Aleksandr Gorshkov won the first international title when Dancing became an official medal event.…

Women In Media Should Help New Entrants Break Through The Glass Ceiling

Women in media should help new entrants to break through "the glass ceiling," say South African award-winning journalists and editors.

One media executeve also argues that the ability to read critically is the major skill that will help girls break through these barriers.

Speaking at the fifth annual Vodacom Women in the Media Awards 2007, Vodacom chief communications officer Dot Field said too few women were in a position of power in the newsroom (globally). Media coverage also tended to favor men, she said.

Fields cited an international study which found that women account for 17% of all media coverage whether print or electronic. This includes stories about women, on womenor where women were used as sources, she said. The majority of the coverage on women is celebrity and royalty-related, she said.

Joyce Sikhakhane, who won the Lifetime Achievement Award said things like balancing the responsibilities of home, family, and child raising still hinder women's advancement in newsrooms. The long hours and late nights required to get ahead in these practitioners also do not help, she said.

Field said successful journalists, editors, media advocates have a responsibility to help break barriers in the media industry so new entrants have a better chance of success.

A key strategy to develop women capable of breaking through the glass ceiling is to ensure that young girls at school learn to read critically, said Patricia Scholtemeyer, CEO of Media24 Magazines and winner of the 2007 Vodacom Women in the Media Award.

"Reading critically is an important contributor to people's ability to think for themselves," she said. …

Best Sports Watch With Speed and Distance Tracking

If you are thinking about upgrading to a serious sports watch for running, cycling rowing or any other outdoor sport that involves moving at rapid velocity, you should seriously consider a watch with speed and distance tracking ability. The best sports watch models track, not only speed, but record distance over a session or group of sessions, log elevation above sea-level, can navigate between marked locations and offer speed, pace and distance alerts

There are several leading model sports watch that have speed and distance tracking at various price points and three main technologies for measuring speed and distance: pedometer, accelerometer foot pod and GPS. Pedometer watches like the Tech 4 O series are among the cheaper and least accurate watches. They are quite on calculating your number of steps to estimate speed and distance.

Of the GPS watches, the Timex Ironman T5E701 is perhaps the cheapest. It features 100-Lap memory, countdown timer and an odometer that tallies up the total distance for a workout or group of workouts. The Garmin Forerunner watches 205, 305 and 405 are the most popular GPS watches on the market. What is less well known is that the 305 and 405 are also compatible with a foot pod unit, just in case GPS is not enough.

Food pot devices measure speed and distance by nearly tracking leg speed and cadence. They are about as accurate as a GPS watch, but may need to be calibrated. Unlike a GPS they can be used around large objects and buildings as well as indoors. A GPS device requires a clear unobstructed view of the sky to pick up the satellite signals. The food pod, unlike a GPS, is not effective when used for rowing or kayaking and can not measure altitude or plot a course in 3D.

Other notable GPS watches to look out for include the recently released GlobalSat GH-25M, the Timex Ironman Bodylink watches, the Polar RS800CX and the Suunto Trainer Series watches.

GPS on Suunto, Polar and Timex watches is handled with an optional add-on pod that is secured to your body with a strap or clip. The GPS pods are an optional feature that does not always come as part of the watch bundle, but can be purchased separately. The Forerunner and GlobalSat watches are one-piece GPS watches.

Whatever your walk of life, if your sport involves you moving from point A to point B, a sports watch that is capable of measuring speed and distance can track your speed, calculate how much distance you have covered or even plot your journey on a map . The possibilities are endless. …
